repetitive bland pattern book
I was disappointed by this book because I expected something better from Lily Chin. The only thing I will add to the other reviewers comments is that she showcases straight lines and diagonals in her blankets. If you like those kind of lines then this is the book for you. If you prefer wavy curves, circular shapes, or the romantic look then stay away from this book.
Hey, may pick up that hook any minute now
I'm not a crocheter, I'm a knitter. I had not seen many crocheted afgans or shawls I would actually consider making until this book showed up in my knitting group. These are beautiful. I kept flipping through, expecting the popcorn lego strangeness so endemic to crochet design, boring blues and ranch color worsted, but instead here there are page after page of carefully patterned, tasteful brocade style richness. There are beautiful edging details, subtle color. Even my snooty mom would have been proud to own anything in here. Great book!
An Excellent Crochet Encyclopedia
I have never made an item from a pattern in this book. That being said, I use the book all the time. Ms. Chin has thoughtfully included enough information in her instructions to allow one the ability to use it as a "stitch enclycopedia." I thoroughly enjoy cable, post and long stitches, and the book is filled with patterns utilizing these stitches.
Some of the techniques are hard to follow. You have to take it step by step in order to reproduce them. I think a bit more thought in the layout of the information would be helpful, as would international symbols.
I love the book and have recommended it to many of my fellow crocheters. Lily is an excellend ambassador for crochet. If her latest book is a thoroughly useful as this one, I will be purchasing it soon.
--Autust, 2005: I have to edit this because I have an afghan almost to Lili's specs, so my first sentence is not quite true anymore. Still am as enthusiactic about the book as ever.
