Review #1

Great resource, but beware of errors!

This is a great ideas and resource book for someone who already has the hang of crocheting. I crochet mostly blankets, so I was looking for different stitch ideas for blankets and this book did not disappoint. However, there are two caveats: the stitch library simply shows how to do a specific stitch or sequence and then it's up to you to decide how you will use or apply the idea, so it's probably not the best book for a beginner AND I found several mistakes -where a sequence of stitches was left out or a single step was left out of the written instructions! After a little bit I was was able to figure out the problem, but I imagine that a beginner would be VERY frustrated. Despite that I overall really like the book because it has given me lots of good ideas and new stitches to try and I like how throughout the book the instructions are provided in the standard written form, a diagram, and a nice color picture. My recommendation is to check it out of the library first to see if it's a good fit for what you want to do and your ability level.

How to Crochet

This book is filled with very good instructions and classic projects. It is an inexpensive source of learning and inspiration.

Review #3

Just what I needed

I checked many crochet books out of my library to review and this was the only one I decided to purchase for my use. I am mostly a self-taught crocheter who has been crocheting on and off for years. This book is wonderful at teaching all those basic principals and details that I never learned on my own. I especially liked the chapters on color work, Tunisian crochet and filet. The projects are wonderfully playful, varied and appealing. I think the instructions and illustrations could not be more clear.

Some of the criticisms of this book are unfounded. The stitches are presented throughout the book and not in one place because they are presented as they relate to a technique in a chapter -- perfectly logical. Other criticisms about where to begin the next row of stitches after chaining and turning are invalid because the insertion point reflects the need to consider what the next row of stitches is to be.

If you want to take your skills up a notch or didn't even know there was another notch, this is the book to do it.
