Great book for new homeowners
This book gives a great overview of how your house works. It's geared towards first time homeowners and I think it does a pretty good job explaining the various systems in a typical house -- how they work and what can go wrong with them.
I think a problem with the book is that it tries to keep every chapter to about 20 pages. I don't know why this is. As a result, some subjects that are more complicated could use more detail, and some just seem to drag on a little longer than I would've liked.
The chapters near the end are also less defined and appear to be just a bunch of thoughts thrown together.
But all-in-all, it's a great book to learn about your new house. The text is easy to read with some humour and good annecdotes from the author's experience. Great housewarming gift.
NOTE: There is a newer version of this book under a different title that you might want to check out (ISBN: 0345449894).
Great book
I recently purchased a home and wasn't sure where to begin if something went wrong. This book does a great job of explaining the inner-workings of a home and demistifies how it works. I can now tackle any task around the house thanks to Lou.He does a great job of explaining in simple terms how each facet of a home works. A must read for any homeowner. He is also a great guy. I've had the opportunity to talk to Lou via email about some problems I was having with my house. He was extremely gracious and intelligent in his response. You won't be dissapointed if you buy this book.
Look out home now I know how you work!
I have a new friend in the home building and renovating business. Having this book is like having a relative that can answer all of the questions I have about repairing and renovating my home. The information is solid and easy to understand, and it will help me to make the right decisions when it comes to spending money on my home.
