What Style !!
Mary Carol Garrity definitely has Style at Home. I can't find enough adjectives to adequately express how much style she actually has. Nothing is too much. It is all attainable no matter what your budget. Just take the ideas and translate them according to your resources. You don't have to own a "real" silver tray - pick up something from Hobby Lobby, Ross, Goodwill, etc. Or even use silver leaf sheets to cover a tray you might already own and transform it into a shining beauty. Buy used books from the library or Half-Price Book stores to use as risers. They don't have to be first edition books. Plates purchased from the aforementioned stores will look great on plate stands or on a wall. A mirror need not be an antique to add pizzaz to your mantle - find a discount mirror or frame with a pretty shape and repaint, gild or silver leaf it (it can even be plastic/resin - shh! don't tell anyone). I've painted frames and ornate discount (cheap!) sconces (wall shelves) with a cordovan colored craft paint then, when dry, painted over that with a dark gel (thick consistency) stain and wiped away the excess. It looked like real wood when finished.

80's excess!
Although Mary Carol is obviously a wonderful women her design style is very dated. In all of her publications her "layering" techniques just say "excess". Todays style is all about simple pared down authentic living. The message I see from Mary Carol's books is all about excess a throw back from the 80's. Mary Carol really needs to bring her obvious talent to the new millenium and push the limit by learning the art of restraint.
Beautiful photos and decorating a 'la NELL HILL style
This is a very beautifully photographed book. If you are familiar with the NELL HILL STYLE, then you will love this book.
The "Nell Hill Style", to me, is very classic and very "romantic". This is not really a how-to book but a book about home ideas...especially if you are the type of decorator that needs photos to inspire you.
