Fashionable sweaters and clear instructions
I taught myself to knit many years ago and have recently returned to knitting as a hobby. This book has many great styles and excellent suggestions for the novice knitter. You will probably also need a good basic instruction guide for things like binding off, slip stitching, etc., but after having made the usual scarves and baby blankets this book is recommended for the next step. 25 Gorgeous Sweaters for the Brand New Knitter
This is an excellent book, not so much for a beginning knitter learning how to knit (it does not include anything about how to cast on or do the basic stitches) but for the knitter that wants to learn how to create a sweater from scratch instead of using a pattern. The examples pictured and described in the book use wonderful yarns; some of them use a combination of leftover yarns; the patterns in the book really are simple at the mechanical knitting level, but encourage creativity and thus give the knitter more ownership of the final product.
