Not so great

I got about halfway through the book before I decided it was not worth finishing and gave it back to the library book store where I had gotten it for a dollar. And even then, I think I overpaid.

Liv is about to get married, has some doubts about the wedding, and keeps dreaming about her old flame - Ben Parker. She gets dumped, flies down to Australia to spend some time with her stereotypically blonde, sexed up, and beautiful best friend where, lo and behold! - there's Ben Parker! Of course, he's unavailable, so Liv has to do a lot hair-pulling and self-deprecation over their impossible relationship.

I like contemporary romance, I can read and reread books like Jemima J and The Undomestic Goddess. And while I heartily enjoy books in this genre, I feel as if you still need something different in a novel to make it worth rereading the usual romantic plotlines. Naylor held her own for a while, I liked the main character, and I enjoy Naylor's writing style. I knew how the story would end, for the most part - which can only be expected with this type of story - but this didn't disappoint me because the ride seemed interesting.

Then Naylor lost it. She brought Liv to Australia for some post-dumping R & R and introduced a whole slew of unrealistic characters which seemed more like space-fillers than necessary components. Liv lost her spunk, became stupidly ignorant, and went through a series of pointless plot twists.

The book lacked both consistency and realism. It's not a horrible story, but for a story that's been written a hundred times, to be rewritten and puffed out with unbelievable and ridiculous details - it's just not worth the read.

Great Beach Read

If you are looking for a book to bring on vacation with you this is it, just a nice Romantic Comedy, to make you laugh and forget for a while.

Didn't hold my attention....

I need to keep reminding myself that Clare Naylor isn't one of my favorite authors. I enjoy her, but she's not in my top ten. This book has a lot to be desired the only thing I thought it had going for it was the fast that it was set in Australia. It's basically about a girl who was dumped by the man she thought she was going to marry, so she follows her best friend who is a professional "girlfriend" down under. On one of her first days droning around she meets a drag queen who takes her under his wing and coaches her on the idea of treating men like dogs. In the mean time, the new crowd in Australia that she is inducted to by default through her friend happens to be the most popular in the country with connections to boot. This includes her long lost first love who happens to be dating the most well known and beautiful socialite. It's all kind of a circus with the crazy roommate she happens to have and the man of her dreams just happening to be right there after all these years. You can imagine how it ends.....
