Great reference
This book has lots of pictures of fashion dolls that people have purchased, modified, and made their own, like completely rerooting hair, making their own complex custom outfits, and repainting faces, anything from vintage Barbies to Malibu Barbie, and newer models, mostly more classic figures. There's a small section in the back with a detailed step by step on how to reroot and repaint figures, and things like making nylons for a doll, and all. It's really quite fantastic and very inspirational if you need ideas on outfits for making your own, and the step by step section is wonderfully detailed, showing little things like how to make a part in doll's hair and how to smooth it out or add curls, and all that fun little things a beginner wouldn't know and would have to figure out on their own. I really like this book, and for the price, it was really a fantastic bargain.
not quite what i wanted
honestly, i was looking for a book on how to do restorations on vintage barbie dolls, and this is just not the book for it! there is one small section in the very end of the book that tells how to do some hair makeovers, but that's it. it's more a book on "famous" artists that have done fashion doll makeovers and their stories. if you're looking for a tutorial on doll restoration, look online. you'll find more information there.
Learning is an adventure, not a standard tour
This is a really inspirational book, but it's not for those who think learning is doing exactly what teacher tells you. Jim Faraone shows his readers what can be achieved, and gives a run-down of tips and techniques, but mostly he allows the work of artists of all ages, nationalities and styles to inspire dreams and ambitions. Jim treasures the individuality and daring of the doll artist and his books help those who dream to dare. How do you "learn from the artists"? By looking at their work and by letting your own curiosity and talent take over, not by following step-by-step directions to a 'creative project' that looks just like everyone else's. The books are treasure troves of inspiration, and worth a place on any doll-lover's bookshelf. Thanks, Jim!
